Ohio's Leading Voice for the Animals
The Lucky Seven
November 2016
Seven horses were starving in Adams County, Ohio.
One horse had already died. As soon as Humane Officer Melissa Downs obtained a warrant, the Ohio SPCA Response Team had their boots on the ground with a horse trailer in tow. As the seven surviving horses stepped onto the trailer, their journey to a new life began. Upon arrival at an undisclosed stable, the seven horses were immediately examined by Dr. Laurie Gallatin. Body scores were found to be below normal with some of the horses having little fat or muscle left. No medical reasons for such underweight conditions could be determined other than a lack of adequate nutrition. Charges against the owner will be filed in Adams County.
The cost of rehabilitation of large animals is very costly with most horses consuming a bale of hay every day. We certainly could use your help as these horses travel the road to recovery.
